Recyclers call for action on UBC fraud

NEW YORK Several West Coast recyclers said the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) and state legislators need to address used beverage container (UBC) importation fraud before it gets worse.
Californias UBC recycling rate jumped to a record-high 107 percent in the first six months of this year from 90 percent in the second half of last year, CalRecycle announced this week (amm.com, Nov. 18). Recycling rates exceeding 100 percent can be a sign of importation fraudan issue California has been dealing with since it increased refunds in 2007 to a nickel for containers less than 24 ounces and a dime....
