Canada requires reporting of hazardous railway cargo

CHICAGO — Railway companies operating in Canada must report shipments of hazardous goods to municipalities through which they travel under a new rule issued by Canadian transportation minister Lisa Raitt.

The ruling—in large part a response to the July 6 derailment and explosion of a runaway oil tanker train that killed 47 people in Lac-Megantic, Quebec—is meant to bolster safety and facilitate a dialogue between railways and municipalities.....
