PITTSBURGH Sims Metal Management Ltd. has idled its Mobile, Ala., auto shredding operation within the past week.
A company spokesman confirmed the decision and said the move was due to dynamics in the marketplace.
"We are evaluating the market conditions on an ongoing basis to determine whether to continue idling the shredder or to restart it. In the meantime, we are continuing as before to buy material at that and our other Gulf region facilities," he said.
The yard is still buying scrap metal across its scales. The material is not being shipped to another Sims shredder, but is being sold to competitors in the marketplace.
Sims acquired the shredder last year when it bought Davids Auto Shredding Inc. (amm.com, Aug. 23, 2012).
Earlier this year, Sims sold its other Alabama shredder and exited the Birmingham market (amm.com, July 26).
