Rail groups support stricter standards

CHICAGO — Class I and short-line railroads, tank car builders and other groups are backing a proposed rule to improve the safety of rail tank cars that carry flammable materials, particularly petroleum products.

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) Committee on Tank Cars, for example, endorsed the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA’s) adoption of safety standards for newly built tank cars that have already been adopted by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Tank Car Committee, and proposed modifying the current tank car fleet to enhance safety.....
