777 a major step for Héroux-Devtek

LOS ANGELES — A contract to build the landing gear for Boeing Co.’s 777 is the biggest part of Héroux-Devtek Inc.’s strategy to focus on this segment of the aerospace industry. But the original manufacturer that’s being replaced is challenging Héroux-Devtek’s right to manufacture a key component.

HDI Landing Gear USA Inc., a Springfield, Ohio-based subsidiary of Héroux-Devtek, has signed a long-term contract with Boeing to supply complete landing gear systems for the 777 twin-aisle airliner, as well as its new 777X derivative. This includes the main and nose landing gear and the nose landing gear drag strut.

The contract will move Longueuil, Quebec-based Héroux-Devtek into the role of lead 777 landing gear supplier, replacing United Technologies Corp.’s UTC Aerospace Systems segment. The Canadian company has been a supplier to UTC Aerospace, producing such components as the piston for the main and nose landing gears.....
