AK, ATI stainless hikes struggle to take hold

NEW YORK — Stainless steel base price increases instituted by AK Steel Corp. and ATI Allegheny Ludlum Corp. in January have struggled to gain a foothold in the market, distributors said, pointing to the failure of competitors North American Stainless Inc. (NAS) and Outokumpu Stainless USA LLC to follow the moves.

Brackenridge, Pa.-based Ludlum increased base prices for most commodity-grade stainless steel products effective Jan. 13 (amm.com, Dec. 20), with West Chester, Ohio-based AK Steel boosting stainless products three days later but effective Jan. 1 (amm.com, Dec. 23).....
