NEW YORK ArcelorMittal USA LLC has started to recall workers in anticipation of resuming coke production at its operations in Monessen, Pa., in the second quarter of 2014, a spokeswoman told AMM sister publication Steel First Jan. 10.
"We are appreciative of the support from the United Steelworkers (union) and the city, county and state to make this restart feasible," the spokeswoman said.
ArcelorMittal announced a $50-million capital investment program at its coke operations in Monessen in September 2012 (amm.com, Sept. 17, 2012). The project will modernize and upgrade the facility, which has been idled since May 2009.
The demolition of equipment that has reached the end of its useful lifeincluding the screening station, quench tower, process vessels and pipinghas now been completed.
Construction continues on the replacement of existing structures and a new wastewater treatment plant, and engineering programs are in place for the associated control structures and new replacement facilities, the company said.
