PITTSBURGH — Upstate Shredding LLC-Ben Weitsman & Son Inc. is continuing its quest for growth with the acquisition of Jack’s Recycling.

Mt. Morris, Pa.-based Jack’s Recycling, Upstate’s 17th scrapyard, is the Owego, N.Y.-based metal recycler and processor’s indirect entrance into the Pittsburgh market as Jack’s sells all of its material to a shredder there.

Upstate president Adam Weitsman said he is excited to be entering a new market for the company. “We can send the material to our megashredder in Owego until (our) New Castle (Pa.) shredder is running,” he said.

Jack’s owner Rick Smith, who runs the day-to-day operations at the yard, plans to stay on after the deal closes, company secretary and Rick’s wife, Crystal Smith, told AMM.

“We have had a lot of offers and this has been a long, hard thought-out decision,” Crystal Smith told AMM. “We’d like to see the business advance to the next level and want to focus more on our family.”

The deal, the terms of which were not disclosed, is expected to close in three to five weeks.

Jack’s, which operates on a nine-acre yard, has 11 employees that service industrial accounts and buy from 80 to 100 retail customers a day.

Rick’s father started the business in 1963 as a salvage yard where customers could buy used auto parts from cars before becoming a pure-play metal recycler in 2006. The yard’s processing includes shearing and crushing cars.

Upstate announced last week that it was buying Capitol Scrap Metal Co. in Albany, N.Y., and the assets of Hornell Waste Material Co. in Hornell, N.Y. (amm.com, Jan. 15).
