Rio Tinto in talks to sell Shawinigan

CHICAGO Rio Tinto Alcan Inc. has signed an exclusive agreement with Pluri-Capital Inc. that could see the consortium purchase the aluminum producers casthouse and smelter in Shawinigan, Quebec, the companies said in a statement.
The Jonquière, Québec-based investment company said in a Jan. 24 statement that its company, Sotrem Inc., which specializes in making and selling aluminum alloys, will be involved in the possible purchase.
"Our intention is to move quickly to reassure customers of the company of sustainable service," Sotrem president Michel Boudreault said in the statement.AMM reported in August that Montreal-based Rio Tinto Alcan was seeking a buyer for the Shawinigan facility (amm.com, Aug. 20). The company confirmed in November that it was looking to sell the operations (amm.com, Nov. 20).....
