NEW YORK — Two steel veterans, Lourenco Goncalves and Thomas A. Danjczek, have joined the judging panel for AMM’s fifth annual Awards for Steel Excellence.

Goncalves, who retired as chairman and chief executive officer of Metals USA Holding Corp. last year, has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry. He previously spent 22 years in leadership positions at California Steel Industries and Cia Siderurgica Nacional (, April 17).

Danjczek was president of the Steel Manufacturers Association for 15 years until his retirement late last year (,Feb. 1 and Oct. 3). He previously spent 30 years in the steel industry, serving in maintenance, operations and management positions at a number of companies, including Bethlehem Steel Corp., Kaiser Steel Corp. and Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.

"These two well-respected steel industry veterans bring additional insights and perspectives to the judging process for the AMM Awards for Steel Excellence, which has established itself as the pre-eminent awards program for our industry," AMM publisher David Brooks said.

Returning judges for the AMM Awards for Steel Excellence are longtime steel executive Thomas Graham; John Lichtenstein, managing director, global metals and APAC natural resources industries, for Accenture Plc in Beijing; Nick Sowar, global metals sector leader for Deloitte & Touche LLP; and AMM executive editor Jo Isenberg-O’Loughlin.

The Awards for Steel Excellence honor outstanding achievements by companies working in and for the steel industry. New this year are categories that recognize excellence by providers of financial and information technology services.

Nominations will be accepted until March 17. Finalists in each category will be announced in May, and award winners will be announced at the Steel Awards Dinner on June 17 in New York in conjunction with the global Steel Success Strategies XXIX Conference presented by AMM and World Steel Dynamics Inc.
