Century wins approval of Sebree power agreement

CHICAGO — Century Aluminum Co. has received approval from Kentucky regulators to buy power on the open market for its Sebree, Ky., smelter in a move the company said will allow the plant to continue to operate "over the long-term."

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (KPSC) said in a statement Jan. 30 that the new agreement—similar to a previous pact negotiated for Century’s Hawesville, Ky., smelter (amm.com, Aug. 14)—is aimed at allowing the Sebree smelter to continue to operate as well as at bolstering the economy in western Kentucky.....
