Schupan eyes growth, hires scrap veterans

NEW YORK — Schupan & Sons Inc. has hired two scrap industry veterans to help lead its growing industrial recycling division.

Gary Curtis, who previously served as executive vice president of business development at Baltimore-based Terrapin Recycling LLC, has been appointed vice president of operations; and Bruce Heimann, a former consultant to the aluminum scrap industry, will develop regional and national marketing accounts.

Prior to his role at Terrapin, Curtis was president of Clayton, N.C.-based Wise Recycling, where he oversaw seven recycling centers and more than 35 feeder facilities.

"I have known Gary for many years and am extremely pleased to welcome his experience and expertise to an expanding division of Schupan & Sons," chief executive officer Marc Schupan said in a statement.

Heimann, who began his career as a summer intern at Schupan Industrial Recycling, also has served as president and chief operating officer of Dart Metals Trading Co., Youngtown, Ohio; vice president and sales director at the former Commercial Alloys Corp., Twinsburg, Ohio; and was a partner at Metal Conversions Ltd., a metals trading company in Mansfield, Ohio.

"Bruce is one of the most knowledgeable veterans of the aluminum industry," Schupan said in the statement. "He will be a valuable mentor and expand Schupan & Sons’ ability to purchase and market aluminum recyclables."

Curtis and Heimann will play integral roles in expanding the company, especially as it looks to grow its recycling business via potential buys, Schupan told AMM.

"The company with the best army wins," he said. "The ability to be sustainable is to have the best people you can find and can grow with the company."

Adding staff who bring long and distinguished track records in the scrap industry is a crucial element to attracting acquisition business, Schupan said. "I think companies are looking to partner with firms that have integrity and who are investing in quality people. It can actually be more of a factor than just the price of material."

Schupan declined to elaborate on the nature of future acquisitions, but said the company was "looking at a few different firms."

Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Schupan & Sons is a third-generation, family owned metals and plastics business specializing in recycling, fabrication and distribution. It has 10 facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
