WC plate prices up despite cheaper imports

LOS ANGELES — Commodity carbon steel plate prices continue to rise on the West Coast even though large spreads persist with lower-priced imports.

There appears to be little pressure on U.S. producers serving the region to discount prices, despite what some market sources describe as a $100-per-ton or more differential with imports.

AMM’s consumer buying price for shredded automotive scrap in the Chicago market slipped $30 per gross ton last week (amm.com, Feb. 10), causing some steel buyers to think twice about their forward purchases due to the possibility that certain finished products might weaken. But plate is an exception.....
