Weather delays Horsehead zinc smelter

NEW YORK — Horsehead Holding Corp. has experienced delays in commissioning its new zinc smelter in Mooresboro, N.C., due to "severe and prolonged cold weather conditions," it said.

The severe weather has caused some damage to piping, valves and fittings, leading to the delays, it said.

"The facility is particularly vulnerable to cold weather during the water circulation testing phase of the commissioning process. This is not expected to be the case during normal operations with acidified solutions since residual heat in the system should be sufficient to minimize the risk of freezing," the Pittsburgh-based company said Feb. 25 in its year-end earnings report. ....
