SSAB deal ‘surprised’ Ruukki Americas

NEW YORK — The head of Finnish specialty steel producer Rautaruukki Oyj’s (Ruukki’s) Americas operations said the parent company’s merger with Swedish rival SSAB AB "caught everybody by surprise" and "is going to change a lot in the future," although it is too soon to tell whether Ruukki’s push into the North American market will be compromised as a result of the deal.

Helsinki-based Ruukki announced an "aggressive, full-bore expansion" into North America in November, a move that involved new offices in Pittsburgh and Toronto that brought Ruukki’s sales, marketing and distribution operations to the United States and Canada for the first time and increased the company’s product offerings to North American consumers (amm.com, Nov. 19).....
