Alpha fined $27.5M for water violations

NEW YORK — Alpha Natural Resources Inc. will pay a $27.5-million fine and spend an estimated $200 million on wastewater treatment and system-wide upgrades as part of a settlement agreement announced by the U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) March 5.

The Bristol, Va.-based company, along with Alpha Appalachian Holdings (formerly Massey Energy) and 66 subsidiaries, agreed to reduce discharges of pollution from coal mines in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.....
