Mills, buyers divided on direction of beam tags

LOS ANGELES — Structural steel mills are trying to reinstate published prices for new beam orders despite many customers doubting the market is ready to accept the full elimination of discounts.

Despite discounts for larger buyers ranging from about $20 to $60 per ton over the past year or so, service center sources said beam producers who claim demand is up this year are increasingly sticking to list prices in response to recent inquiries.

This would bring the prevailing transaction price for core sizes of wide-flange beams to $41 per hundredweight ($820 per ton), including a $1-per-cwt ($20-per-ton) increase over the past 10 days by major producers of the product (amm.com, March 10).....
