NEW YORK — ArcelorMittal USA LLC’s Georgetown, S.C., wire rod mill has been temporarily idled due to an oil spill on an adjacent river, a company spokeswoman said.

“ArcelorMittal Georgetown was notified March 19 of an observed oil presence on the Sampit River. ArcelorMittal takes this situation very seriously and has been working cooperatively with the agencies involved to address the situation,” she told AMM via e-mail. “As a precaution, the rod mill has been temporarily idled until the issue is resolved. We do not anticipate any significant impact on customers at this time.”

She declined to give further details about the spill’s cause.

The Georgetown mill has an electric-arc furnace with a capacity of 600,000 tons of liquid steel and 750,000 tons of wire rod per year, serving the construction, automotive, industrial and converters markets, Chicago-based ArcelorMittal’s website states.
