Smelters’ aluminum scrap prices ease

NEW YORK — Prices for most grades of secondary smelters’ aluminum scrap slipped March 24 as sources said that a slightly improved flow of material had encouraged buyers to test the lower end of the market.

The downward momentum follows a recent decline in prices for nonferrous auto shred (twitch and zorba) caused by weak demand from China (amm.com, March 24) .

“We have pulled in our scrap prices by about a penny over the last week,” one scrap purchaser told AMM. “There is definitely room at the bottom of the market. Material is beginning to emerge from the yards and we have been able to do deals at lower numbers.”....
