Titanium sponge imports tumble in 2013

LOS ANGELES — U.S. titanium sponge imports fell 40.9 percent last year but industry stocks jumped nearly as much as U.S. production.

Sponge imports fell to 19,900 tonnes (43.87 million pounds) from 33,700 tonnes (74.3 million pounds) in 2012 as Japan increased its position and Kazakhstan, which once occupied the top spot, fell to last place, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

While Japanese shipments fell 29.1 percent to 13,400 tonnes (29.54 million pounds) from 18,900 tonnes (41.67 million pounds) in 2012, they nevertheless increased their share of all U.S. imports to 67.3 percent from 56 percent.....
