Anglo focusing on productivity gains

SANTIAGO, Chile — The global economic downturn was a wake-up call to the mining industry and has driven Anglo American Plc to focus on improving productivity, according to Hennie Faul, chief executive officer of the miner’s copper division.

The company has gone back to basics and targeted the "dull stuff of running operations efficiently, with a focused engineering approach," Faul told AMM during the Center for Copper and Mining Studies’ annual Cesco Week in Santiago.

"The mining industry lost focus and it was not sustainable," he said, noting that the sector had been caught up in merger and acquisition mania as well as expansions for the sake of expanding.

"I think the next phase for Anglo American, out to 2016, is really focused on the core business of looking at the current values that we have—we have got a lot of resources in copper. We previously focused on a massive pipeline, and some of them very long dated projects," he said.....
