LOS ANGELES — Greenbrier Cos. has hired Jim Cowan, former chief executive officer of a rival rail car builder, to fill a key operating post in what some Wall Street observers believe could be the first step on a path to Greenbrier’s chief executive officer post.

Cowan, former president and chief executive officer of American Railcar Industries Inc. who also spent more than 25 years in the steel tubulars business, has been named to the new post of senior vice president of operations at the Lake Oswego, Ore.-based manufacturer of rail cars and marine barges.

Cowan resigned abruptly from American Railcar last year to "pursue other interests" after nearly eight years with the St. Charles, Mo., tank car specialist, which is controlled by billionaire investor Carl Icahn (amm.com, Oct. 14).....
