Environmental laws to raise Chinese steel costs

SHANGHAI — Amendments to China’s environmental protection law that threaten tougher punishments for polluters has drawn mixed reactions from the country’s steelmakers.

Revisions to the law will allow the government to impose penalties daily—instead of just once—if a company continues to pollute after receiving orders to cease, confiscate and shut down polluting facilities, and detain company executives for up to 15 days, China’s National People’s Congress said in a statement.....
