Mergers altering terrain for centers: Immell

NEW YORK — Consolidation in the copper service center industry and price increases by mills have affected the way service centers function, former Copper and Brass Servicenter Association president Scott F. Immell said.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some more consolidations out there, maybe not at the pace they were a few years ago," Immell said. "There is a trend of the big getting bigger."

But Immell doesn’t believe that customers will necessarily benefit from the new landscape. "I think from the mill side, they probably think that they are vertically integrating and are chasing efficiencies in their business. But from the customer side, lead times are out eight to 10 weeks," he said.....
