Greenbrier wins second barge order

LOS ANGELES — An order for a second oceangoing barge will continue to boost a marine backlog at Greenbrier Cos. and increase steel plate requirements in the Pacific Northwest.

Greenbrier’s Gunderson Marine division in Portland, Ore., has received an order for a second articulated oceangoing oil and chemical tank barge from Kirby Offshore Marine, a unit of Houston-based Kirby Corp., "to meet sustained demand," it said.

Greenbrier said the 578-foot tank barge with a carrying capacity of 185,000 barrels is "identical" to the one Kirby ordered in January (amm.com, Jan. 17), which industry sources described as twice as long as those recently built in the Northwest. The second barge is due to be completed in the first half of 2016.....
