U.S. Steel layoffs part of cost-cutting plan

PITTSBURGH — U.S. Steel Corp. has laid off employees, including at its Pittsburgh headquarters, as part of a cost-cutting push.

The steelmaker said the move comes as it looks to save $290 million through its "Carnegie Way" initiative, which is aimed at returning the company to long-term profitability.

"A portion of that is related to headcount reductions in locations throughout the world," a U.S. Steel spokeswoman told AMM in an e-mail late May 2. "These have been difficult decisions but have been carefully considered." ....
