Cliffs considering Midwest DRI joint venture

INDIANAPOLIS Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. is exploring the possibility of selling direct-reduced iron (DRI) grade pellets to electric-arc furnace (EF) based steelmakers in the Great Lakes region or potentially entering into a joint venture to build a DRI plant, a company executive said.
The Cleveland-based iron ore and metallurgical coal producer could also pursue both opportunities, P. Kelly Tompkins, executive vice president of external affairs and president of global commercial, told AMM May 7.
"We know we can produce technically ... further to that is do we move down the value chain to participate in a DRI plant?" Tompkins said on the sidelines of the Association of Iron and Steel Technologies AISTech conference in Indianapolis.....
