Aircraft retirements seen boon for scrap

NEW YORK — The aviation industry is facing a "tsunami" of aircraft retirements in the coming years, sending a wave of material into the aerospace scrap recycling stream, according to industry executives.

Aircraft retirements are expected to reach 1,000 planes annually within a decade, Richard Brown, principal at Fairfax, Va.-based consultancy ICF International Inc., told attendees at the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association’s (Afra’s) annual meeting, held June 15-17 in Washington.

The increase in aircraft retirements will be due primarily to cyclical rather than structural reasons, he said.....
