US imports of Ukraine wire rod may rise

NEW YORK — Modest steel wire rod shipments from Ukraine’s Metinvest could arrive in the United States in coming months at prices comparable to Turkish wire rod, according to the company and U.S. traders.

The removal of anti-dumping duties on wire rod from Ukraine, announced May 30 (amm.com, May 30), has "created new opportunities for exports of Ukrainian wire rod," a Metinvest spokeswoman told AMM sister publication Steel First via e-mail.

However, Metinvest’s long-standing supply agreements with wire rod consumers in Ukraine and the Mediterranean mean the company has limited wire rod volumes available for long-distance shipments, making it "highly likely that wire rod shipments to the U.S. will be moderate," the spokeswoman said.

The Donetsk, Ukraine-based steelmaker likely will use its own sales force to sell to U.S. customers, according to traders who contacted Metinvest shortly after the duties were abolished. Metinvest, one of Ukraine’s largest steelmakers, has its own "broad international sales network," according to the company’s website.....
