Downturn squeezes secondary margins

NEW YORK Secondary aluminum smelters and iron foundries suffered big drops in revenue in 2012, while can manufacturers recorded improved revenue compared with 2007, according to the 2012 Economic Census.
The total value of shipments and receipts for services provided by secondary aluminum smelters and alloy makers totaled $5.8 billion in 2012, down 33.4 percent from $8.7 billion in 2007, according to data released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau. But the total cost of materials dropped 28.1 percent to $4.78 billion from $6.66 billion in the same comparison, indicating some margin compression.....
