NEW YORK — Higher aluminum prices and lower power rates in the Midwest helped Century Aluminum Co. return to profitability in the second quarter.

The Chicago-based aluminum producer posted net income of $20.3 million for the three months ended June 30 in contrast to a net loss of $29.4 million in the same period last year. Sales for the period increased 38.1 percent to $458.3 million from $331.9 million.

Shipments of primary aluminum totaled 216,044 tonnes, including 53,966 tonnes from the Sebree, Ky., operation acquired in June 2013 (amm.com, June 3). This is up 22.6 percent from 176,270 tonnes shipped in the comparable period last year.....
