Scrap trading veteran Peterson retires

PITTSBURGH — Raymond Peterson retired as vice president of trading at Allegheny Raw Materials Inc. (ARM) after 44 years in the industry, effective July 31.

The size of the industry and the technology are what has changed the most in the industry landscape since his arrival, according to Peterson.

"The U.S. steel industry has been on a steady decline, and the biggest change has been the ascension of the EF (electric-arc furnace) as the primary melting method," he said. "The (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) killed the integrated steel industry beginning in the late ’70s because they made it hard to produce coke."....
