NEW YORK — Gerdau SA’s North American special steel division started up a twin tank vacuum degassing system at its special bar quality (SBQ) steel mill in Monroe, Mich., in May, a move keyed to increase quality but one that is impacting customer deliveries, which have been hampered due to expansion activities and operational challenges, market sources told AMM.

Porto Alegre, Brazil-based Gerdau had said in an update last year that it would likely start up the degasser in March (amm.com, Sept. 26).

Commenting on the delays, Jack Finlayson, president of Gerdau NA’s special steel division, acknowledged that "this is a time of transformation for us," in a public statement July 31. "We have experienced a few setbacks including weather and construction-related issues during this transition, but we have corrected them and are prepared to meet the growing demands of our customers."....
