The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker has filed suit in U.S. District Court in Arkansas alleging that the project is in violation of its environmental obligations under the Clean Air Act and other environmental statutes.

"We have a valid permit and continue to construct our steel mill," Big River Steel chief commercial officer Mark Bula told AMM via e-mail Aug. 11.

The lawsuit, which seeks to prevent "the commencement or continuation" of construction on Big River Steel’s facility, follows the passing of a 60-day window since Armorel, Ark.-based Nucor Steel-Arkansas and Blytheville, Ark.-based Nucor-Yamato Steel Co. sent a notice to Big River Steel, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality saying it intended to file a citizen suit over Big River Steel’s alleged Clean Air Act violations.....
