Power regulators reject Noranda rate relief

NEW YORK Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp.s request for a lower electricity rate has been rejected by the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC).
The PSC voted unanimously in favor of keeping the existing rate structure for the New Madrid, Mo., smelter, noting that Norandas claim of pending financial woes due to elevated power rates did not meet the burden of proof.
"We were not persuaded that Norandas liquidity crisis was justified," PSC chairman Robert S. Kenney said during an Aug. 20 meeting. "We felt the case was not made for a change in the rate design." ....
