US-import plate price spread widens on W. Coast

LOS ANGELES — Energy-related business and its domestic melt requirements continue to drive West Coast steel plate demand while distributors battle in what some describe as a separate market where pricing is dominated by lower import tags.

Recent domestic mill increases of $30 per ton ($1.50 per hundredweight) have raised delivered prices on domestic plate shipped from east of the Rockies to an estimated $48 to $50 per cwt for warehouse grades and sizes, depending on the buyer and local market.....
