2018 Awards for Steel Excellence Finalists

May 02, 2018 | 08:00 PM |

Resilience and resourcefulness are two hallmarks of the steel industry, and those traits were on full display in the nominations received for the ninth annual American Metal Market Awards for Steel Excellence.

“We again had an outstanding year in both the quality and the quantity of the nominations, reflecting the continued strengthening of the global steel industry and the innovative solutions to further increase competitiveness of individual companies and the industry at large,” said Raju Daswani, chief executive officer of American Metal Market.

This year’s finalists total 53 companies in 15 categories. Nominations were received from the entire steel supply chain – from tube and pipe companies, steelmakers, service centers, raw materials providers, scrap equipment suppliers and recyclers to purveyors of technology, logistics, information technology, legal and financial services critical to the industry.

Finalists were selected by senior American Metal Market editors, and those entries were scored by steel industry veterans who serve as judges to select the winners. This year’s judges are: Michelle Applebaum, veteran steel analyst and founder of Steel Market Intelligence; Tom Danjczek, advisor and past president, Steel Manufacturers Association; Jo Isenberg-O’Loughlin, retired
AMM executive editor; Bill Jones, retired vice-chairman, O’Neal Industries; Vince Pappalardo, managing director, metals, Brown Gibbons Lang & Company; Nick Sowar, global metals sector leader, Deloitte & Touche LLP; and Jim Wainscott, retired chairman,
AK Steel Corp.

“In the past few years, we have seen an increase in nominations not only from the large, well-known firms but also the smaller, frequently family-owned firms as well, which indicates that excellence knows no size limitations. The smaller firms are more typically establishing their platforms for growth, and the recognition provided by becoming a finalist and/or winner can help in that quest,” said Bette Kovach, veteran steel industry communications executive and program manager for the AMM Awards.

Winners will be announced on June 26 at the annual Steel Awards Dinner in New York City held in conjunction with the annual global Steel Success Strategies conference presented by American Metal Market and World Steel Dynamics. Profiles of the winners will be featured in the July issue of Metal Market Magazine. Here we present short summary descriptions of the entries submitted by all of the finalists.
