Steel’s man of hour Dan DiMicco

Keywords:

As Daniel R. DiMicco prepared to speak during luncheon ceremonies at the Steel Success Strategies XXII conference in New York in June, he reached for his eyeglasses.

"I can't see anything without my glasses," DiMicco said with a laugh as he was feted for his vision in directing Nucor Corp. to its position of prominence in the global steel industry.

The chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Charlotte, N.C.,-based steelmaker received the 17th Willy Korf/Ken Iverson Steel Vision Award during the annual conference co-sponsored by AMM and World Steel Dynamics Inc. The award carried special meaning for DiMicco in that it bears the name of Nucor founder Iverson, the first recipient.

"I am humbled and honored to receive this award," DiMicco told the approximately 1,100 in attendance. He said he accepted the award on behalf of Nucor's management team, singling out executives as well as the efforts of 15,000 Nucor "teammates" who he said were the driving force behind the company.

He also invoked the name of Iverson in his brief acceptance remarks. "Thank you, Ken, for creating a company and a culture that has given so many of us in this room such a great opportunity to be successful in our careers," he said.

Iverson is credited with launching the electric furnace steel producer into prominence with his approach to technology and management style during the 1970s. DiMicco, who joined Nucor in 1982, has embodied Iverson's vision since taking over as president and chief executive officer in 2000.
