Components manufacturers give options to architects

Keywords: Tags  stainless steel, structural, components

Manufacturers of stainless steel structural components for architects and designers comprise a varied cross-section of the North American steel industry.

Most serve a dual function. As well as making stainless tube, pipe, roll-formed shapes such as angles, channels, open and butt seam tubing, extruded shapes and welded fabrications, they also act as service centers for major manufacturers of stainless, such as ATI Allegheny Ludlum Corp. in Brackenridge, Pa.; North American Stainless Inc., Ghent, Kent.; and Finland-based Outokumpo Oy’s North American plants in New Castle, Ind., Richburg, S.C., Wildwood, Fla., and Brockville, Ontario.

One of the leaders in the field is Stainless Structurals LLC, Jacksonville, Fla., known by architects and designers for its roll-formed shapes and laser-welded components.

TriPyramid Structures Inc., Westford, Mass., is at the other end of the scale. Its stainless curtain wall components are at the heart of the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. Completed in 1989, the Pyramid at the entrance to the world-famous Louvre Museum appears to be a wall of glass floating on air but is actually supported by thin stainless beams.

Companies such as American Stainless Tubing Inc., Statesville, N.C., and Phoenix Tube Co. Inc., Bethlehem, Pa., produce the hollow steel tubing that goes into many stainless handrails around the world. Roll-formed products used in stainless steel construction applications are produced by such components makers as Allegheny Rodney, New Bedford, Mass., and McDonald Steel Corp., McDonald, Ohio. Pyramid Mouldings Inc., Green Cove Springs, Fla., is often selected by architects and designers for its roll-formed angles and channels.

There are only two manufacturers in the United States devoted exclusively to extruded stainless shapes, American Extruded Products, Beaver Falls, Pa., and Plymouth Extruded Shapes. But extruded stainless components make up a much smaller percentage of the components market than tubular and roll-formed shapes.
