Turkish HRC import prices from EU, CIS stay steady on lacklustre demand

Turkish hot rolled coil (HRC) import prices from European and CIS mills were unchanged this week, according to Turkish market participants.

HRC import prices stood at $680-700 per tonne cfr main Turkish port for May production and delivery, unchanged from deals were concluded last week.

“ArcelorMittal Galati in Romania is the main supplier of HRC to Turkey as its prices are always competitive,” a trader in Istanbul said.

CIS, Spanish and Italian HRC exporters have also been offering material to Turkey, but sales have been slow.

“European and CIS mills publish their prices once a month – between the first and third week in the month depending on the mill,” a source from a Turkish service centre said.

“I haven’t heard of any imports this week. Everything comes down to the price. If imports are cheaper, then consumers will buy from the import market rather than the domestic market. ArcelorMittal Galati has short lead times they can deliver in about two days.”

Demand for HRC imports to Turkey remains slow and sales have been few and far between, Metal Bulletin was told.

“Stockists in Turkey prefer to buy from Turkish mills, and tube and pipe producers prefer to import from the CIS or Europe due to lower prices,” a stockist source in Turkey said.
