PITTSBURGH — Alpha Natural Resources Inc. has closed a metallurgical coal surface mine in Raleigh County, W.Va., and has no plans to reopen it.

The Bee Tree Mine produced a high-volatile type-B coal and there is no market for it, a spokesman for the Abingdon, Va.-headquartered company said.

The closure is in addition to plans Alpha announced earlier to idle or reduce operations at 10 mines in Kentucky and West Virginia due to soft conditions in the metallurgical coal market (AMM, Feb. 7).
