PITTSBURGH — Alpha Natural Resources Inc. has elected Kevin S. Crutchfield chairman of its board of directors.

Crutchfield, who is chief executive officer, succeeds Michael J. Quillen, who did not stand for re-election.

Crutchfield said. "He has served as an exceptional role model for all of us who believe in treating each and every employee with dignity and respect."

The Bristol, Va.-based metallurgical coal mining company announced earlier this year that Quillen planned to step down.
