PITTSBURGH — A metals recycler and auto wrecker in North Bennington, Vt., is planning to open a second location about 10 miles away across the state border in New York.

The Zoning Board of Appeals in Hoosick, N.Y., has recommended that the town’s planning board approve a request from Brownell’s Auto Wrecking Services to open a metals recycling facility on a 27-acre site that housed a paperboard mill until it closed in 2008.

The site, which will be renamed Walloomsac Metal Recycling, has a rail spur that taps into the Vermont Rail System.

"Our location now is too small for the amount of metal we are buying," partner Bobby Brownell told AMM. The company, which buys salvage vehicles as well as ferrous and nonferrous metals, sells all its material to Owego, N.Y.-based Upstate Shredding LLC-Ben Weitsman & Son Inc.

Brownell said a 70-foot truck scale is already at the location. He said the yard could open at the end of August if approved by the planning board, which is scheduled to meet Monday.
