NEW YORK — John Silva has joined Upstate Shredding LLC-Ben Weitsman & Son Inc. as vice president of port operations.

A 20-year industry veteran, Silva comes to the company from New York-based Sims Metal Management Ltd., where most recently he was vice president of Northeast operations.

Silva will be based at the company’s Ben Weitsman of Buffalo retail scrap operation, which is under construction, until his noncompete contract with Sims expires, Owego, N.Y.-based Upstate Shredding said Thursday.

After that, Silva will help run the company’s proposed 18-acre Port of Albany export terminal and full-service scrap business (, Sept. 12), the company said.

Upstate Shredding expects to process more than 1 million tons of ferrous scrap metal and 200 million pounds of nonferrous scrap metal in 2013, it said.
