SINGAPORE BHP Billiton Plc has suspended operations at its Nickel West Leinster underground mine in western Australia after a rock fall, confirming that it evacuated 79 workers.
"We have begun a comprehensive investigation as to the cause," a company spokesman told AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin on Monday, one day after the incident. He added that no one was injured and all employees have been accounted for.
The evacuation process was interrupted by a power outage, but all employees were safely evacuated, he said.
"Plans are being developed for resuming normal operations, including comprehensive inspections of all parts of the mine and equipment," the spokesman added.
The Leinster operation is part of BHPs Nickel West division and is located in the Eastern Goldfields region.
