SA strikes prompt Amplats to declare force majeure

NEW YORK — Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (Amplats) has declared force majeure on deliveries of chrome ore to customers, the company announced Friday.

Workers at the company’s Rustenburg, Union and Amandelbult mining operations in South Africa are striking, and attendance levels are below 20 percent.

Last week, Amplats dismissed 12,000 striking employees in the Rustenburg area.

"The ongoing illegal strike by Anglo American Platinum employees will adversely affect the company’s delivery obligations regarding the supply of chrome ore and, as a result, force majeure notices have been issued to its chrome customers," the Johannesburg-based company said.

"The company’s ability to deliver Platinum Group Metals and base metals, however, remains unaffected at this stage," the company added.
