NEW YORK Misumi USA Inc. plans on expanding its recently opened West Coast operations, marketing communications manager Patrick Esposito told AMM Friday.
Schaumburg, Ill.-based Misumia division of Tokyos Misumi Group Inc.recently added cutting capabilities to its Los Angeles service center and will begin drilling and precision cutting at the California facility in the next six months, Esposito said.
Misumi produces and supplies components for automated machinery used in labor-saving production systems, including factory automation equipment. It also develops and supplies connection harnesses, cables, connectors, breakers, switches and other control device parts, and develops components used in metal press and molding dies for the automotive, electronics and electrical machinery industries.
Misumi currently offers drilling and precision cutting at its Chicago plant, Esposito said, but due to expected demand increases across a variety of key industries--notably automotive, medical, packaging and pharmaceuticalthe parent decided to add equipment to the West Coast center, which specializes in aluminum extrusions and opened in June.
The West Coast continues to be a strong market for us. We're not only serving the Western seaboard, but Arizona, Nevada and Texas, too, he said. Medical devices is a very important market for us. We expect that to grow.
The auto sector should continue to be strong as well as more automakers continue to shift to the lightweight metal to meet growing fuel emissions standards, he added.
It is unclear how President Obama's Affordable Care Act will affect the domestic medical devices industry, he said.
In theory, it could help if usage increases, Esposito said. But there may be logjams in the system for 18 months. We just don't know.
