Tata Steel to cut 900 jobs in UK

LONDON — India's Tata Steel Ltd. will cut as many as 900 jobs across its U.K. operations as part of a restructuring plan, the company said Friday.

The Mumbai-based steelmaker will cut 580 jobs in south Wales, along with 155 in Yorkshire, 120 in the West Midlands and 30 in Teesside, all in England, it said.

The job cuts are part of the company’s attempt to improve the competitiveness of its U.K. operations to "successfully perform in changing markets," it said.

While some of Tata’s sites will benefit from £22-million ($35-million) in new investments and increased employment, 12 sites will be permanently closed, including Tafarnaubach and Cross Keys, both in South Wales, Tata said. In addition, shifts at the company’s Rotherham and Hartlepool operations in England will be reduced in response to lower demand for bar products and pipe, Tata said.
