NEW YORK — Newmont Mining Corp. chief executive officer Richard O’Brien plans to retire March 1.

Gary Goldberg, currently president and chief operating officer, will succeed O’Brien, according to the Denver-based mining company.

Prior to joining Newmont, Goldberg spent 30 years at London-based Rio Tinto Plc, serving as president and chief executive officer of Rio Tinto’s minerals division from 2006 to 2011.
