CHICAGO — Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) plans to spend Canadian $107 million ($108.28 million) on two environmental projects.

The Sorel-Tracy, Quebec-based subsidiary of London-based Rio Tinto Plc said the projects are aimed at reducing sulfur dioxide emissions and improving dust collection.

One project, expected to cost C$85 million ($86.02 million), will see a new emissions treatment plant built at the company’s metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy, the company said. Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and be completed by late 2014.

The second project will entail installing a new dust collection system that will allow RTFT to comply with more-stringent environmental regulations slated to take effect in Quebec in 2013. RTFT expects to complete the C$22-million ($22.26-million) project next summer.

Both investments are part of an initiative announced in May 2011 to spend C$800 million over five years to bolster RTFT’s operations in Quebec, said the company, which makes titanium dioxide feedstock as well as iron, steel and metal powders.
